Pneumology deals with the study and treatment of respiratory diseases. Medical diagnosis is made after taking the case history and conducting the clinical and paraclinical investigations; treatments with medium and long-term results often rely on complementary therapies as well.
The common investigations required to diagnose pleural and pulmonary diseases are: laboratory tests, sputum culture, spirometry, lung X-ray, chest computed tomography, pleural ultrasound (ultrasound-guided thoracentesis).
There are 3 known types of lung diseases:
1. Diseases of the respiratory tract (also referred to as obstructive lung diseases) which cause narrowing or blockage of the respiratory tract. Such diseases are: asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The main symptom of patients is difficulty breathing.
2. Diseases that affect lung tissue due to the formation of scars or lung tissue inflammation, thus hampering sufficient dilation of the lungs. These conditions are known as restrictive lung diseases. Lung function when inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide is, thus, diminished. Pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis are the most common restrictive lung diseases, making patients who suffer from such conditions feel that they cannot get enough air and cannot breathe in deeply.
3. Diseases of the pulmonary circulation that affect the blood vessels of the lungs. These diseases may often alter the heart function.
According to global statistics, respiratory diseases rank second after cardiovascular diseases in terms of mortality, incidence, prevalence and costs. The good news is that most of these diseases are preventable or controllable if diagnosed early.
