Ozone and medical treatment with ozone (ozone therapy)

            The ozone is an allotropic form of oxygen, the structure of which contains 3 oxygen atoms. It is naturally produced in atmosphere, under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, being an indicator of soil pollution.

            Although it is known since 1840, it was used for the first time during the First World War as a medical treatment to heal the wounds of the German soldiers. Later, it was used in cancers and canning therapy.

            Just as any other medicine or medical procedure, the ozone therapy offers many benefits. However, if inhaled in large quantities it causes toxicity for the body, as the respiratory tract does not have its own antioxidant system. In current medical practice, the ozone is administrated in combination with oxygen, using only few micrograms of ozone, practically ozone toxicity being limited to irritation and minor pain at the injection site for several minutes.

            How is ozone therapy used as medical treatment?

            Depending on pathology, we may opt for systemic ozone administration (major autohemotherapy, minor autohemotherapy or rectal insufflation) or local administration (subcutaneous, intramuscular injections, vaginal insufflation, ozone bags, topical cream, ozonized water or oil). Methods of administration of ozone therapy have different indications, contraindications, risks and costs depending on pathology and individual factors.

            How does ozone may help?

            The mechanisms of action of ozone are:
- modulating the production of cytokines in immune cells;
- disinfection and sterilization of infected wounds or gangrene;
- increased tissue oxygenation;
- improves immunocompromised surveillance and is an adjuvant treatment of neoplasia;
- increases bone density in osteoporosis;
- stimulates cellular immunological functions;
- modulates the excessive activity of antibodies from chronic and autoimmune inflammatory diseases;
- has a virustatic effect on hepatitis and HIV, by stimulating interferon production;
- important anti-inflammatory activity;
- Improves wound healing.
